Reviews:
GoLite Phantom Jacket Outside looks sharp with a nice trim and fold-down tuck in hood. Small details are carefully sewn in like zippered openings under arms for air.Seams are all taped and waterproofed. Colors are nice too. The jacket has a 'noisy' fabric if used for running. It rubs together to make a rustling sound, and the sitff high neck make it undesirable for running. It would be fine for hiking and biking.Where this jacket fails miserably is in its non-functioning 'waterproofed' Goretex coating. When I ran in a hard rain, my inside shirt was soaked and chilly. This is not typical of Goretex. Other Goretex shells and shoes, have been extremely impenetrable to rain water and the body stays bone dry while sweat evaporates thru the breathable layer and water stays out. Not so on this jacket. It's functionality is seriously compromised as it leaks like a sieve, and this could lead to harm if the athlete is counting on its protection in foul weather in a hostile environment.
Try before you buy I bought this jacket to go over a softshell I was buying at the same time, never having seen or tried it as I live in the UK. I'm very disappointed with it - the arms aren't long enough to cover the soft shell jacket or my jumpers, and after less than a year the hook for hanging it at the back of the neck and come away because the stitching has ripped the inside of the jacket material. The lower price definitely reflects a far lower quality of jacket - I'm now looking for a replacement :-(
2nd Phantom I recently purchased my second GoLite Phantom (unfortunately my first was taken from a bar) as my first one performed perfectly, was wonderfully lightweight and cost less than all other jackets made with Gore Pac-Lite with its features. What I like best about the Phantom is that it is extremely well ventilated with flow-through pockets and generous pit zips. Any one who has used Gore-tex in its various forms knows that, although better than non-breathable fabrics, it really doesn't breathe that well and thus ventilation is key. To use any Gore product for running or high aerobic output is begging to get soaked from one's own sweat—there are much better fabrics for this application. The simplicity, compactness, ventilation and clean look of this jacket make it a fantastic piece for backpacking. I was at a music festival this summer where it down poured for 12 straight hours and I was bone-dry in my Phantom. I have guided in the west for several years and tried a lot of different rain gear and I like the Phantom the best so far!
