| The Ortovox Probe 240 is a good middle length probe (Ortovox uses the same creative model naming system as Life Link but when they say 240, they mean 240). The sections of this probe are each individually colored red, yellow, or blue making it a bit easier to determine the precise snow depth to which you have probed. This probe weighs 250 grams or 9 oz and is 15.5 inches long when collapsed. |

In spite of the popularity of telescoping backcountry poles/probes I would recommend always carrying a separate lightweight probe while traveling in avalanche prone terrain. The extra time needed to convert your pole to a probe could be a fatal waste while a friend lays buried under the snow. The 240 cm deploys quickly without hassle. An essential part of any backcountry powder junkies arsenal of gear.
